Are you allergic to dogs but still want to have one? Here are some things you need to know about “hypoallergenic” dogs and what breeds fall into this category.
You might be wondering, why the quotations around hypoallergenic? Well, that is because that term is typically used to describe dogs that do not shed. However, shedding is not the source of the allergy in most cases. The most common allergen from dogs is actually a protein found in canine dander (dead skin), saliva, and urine. These particles collect in your dog's fur and settle in their environment which can cause allergy symptoms when inhaled. Having a dog that does not shed may help reduce the spread of those particles if your dog is groomed on a regular basis but these breeds are not technically hypoallergenic. With that being said, I am going to tell you about some of the best non-shedding dog breeds.
Hypoallergenic dog breeds:
1.Poodle
Poodles are bred in 3 different sizes; Toy, Miniature and Standard. Poodles are not as high maintenance as their reputation leads them to be. They are very intelligent and can be very athletic sporting dogs. They are great dogs for families with active lifestyles who will bring their dog with them on adventures.
Life Expectancy: 10 - 18 years
Size: Standard (45 - 70 lbs), Miniature (12 - 20 lbs) & Toy (5 - 7 lbs)
2. Bichon Frise
The Bichon Frise is very loyal and will want to spend every minute with you. They may be velcro dogs but they are very smart dogs. This breed often does best in homes where their people are home a lot. They have a moderate amount of energy which makes them ideal for someone with a lowkey lifestyle.
Life Expectancy: 14 - 15 years
Size: 12 - 18 lbs
3. Portuguese Water Dog
This breed is a firecracker. Originally bred to help fisherman, the Portuguese Water Dog is bred to work. Their high intelligence and need to people-please makes them great companions for hunters and other avid outdoorsmen. Excess energy can often turn into mischief, so if you are willing to keep up, this is the dog for you.
Life Expectancy: 11 - 13 years
Size: 35 - 60 lbs
4. Miniature Schnauzer
These dogs may be small but their personalities, most definitely, aren't. This breed is feisty, energetic, smart and likes being the center of attention. They are relatively easy to care for and can do well in small spaces or apartments. This is a great breed for first time pet owners.
Life Expectancy: 12 - 15 years
Size: 11 - 18 lbs
5. Yorkshire Terrier
Commonly known as the Yorkie, Yorkshire Terriers are great dogs if you are simply looking for a companion to spend all your time with. This breed is perfectly content cuddling on the couch or chilling in a handbag. Their hair is very beautiful but it does require a lot of upkeep. So, if you are going to get a Yorkie, it might be a good idea to start factoring grooming into your budget now.
Life Expectancy: 11 - 15 years
Size: 4 - 7 lbs
6. Bolognese
No, I am not talking about the pasta but the breed is also Italian. The Bolognese is a playful breed who is really just here for a good time. If you want a laid back, go with the flow kind of dog, this could be the one for you.
Life Expectancy: 12 - 14 years
Size: 5 - 9 lbs
7. Bedlington Terrier
The Bedlington Terrier is often compared to sheep because of its soft fluffy coat. This is a very social breed so if you’re looking for a dog to help you make friends, a Beddie might be your ticket. They are active dogs and do need regular walks and attention.
Life Expectancy: 11 - 16 years

8. West Highland White Terrier
Westies are fiercely independent dogs. They are smart and love being the center of attention. They have lots of energy and would do best in an active household. While most Westies love attention, they also love their personal space and don’t always want to snuggle.

Size: 15 - 20 lbs
